Would you rather have a Remington or Savage rifle?

I am looking at the Remington 700 and Savage 110/111 rifles. I have about $500 to spend. This will be a hunting rifle.
The Remington SPS is supposed to have a great feeling action, but I don’t think it looks as nice as the Savage. (I am not a huge fan of syn stocks and I can not afford Rem 700 hardwood guns…)
The Savage looks great with a hardwood stock, but how will it perform? (Will that accu-trigger hold up in the feild?) Also the 110 savage comes with a crappy scope, so I will need to buy a new one anyway.
I am just really torn.
Should I forget about looks and go with the Remington 700 SPS or should I get the Savage?
I am so confused.

I went and looked at both, the Remingtons 700’s action is horrible…. I ended up buying the Savage 110 with the accu trigger, 30-06…. the scope is ok, Simmons…. im not a big fan of simmons at all…. the rifles action is solid and smooth…. a better rifle in my opinion and im happy with it. I would take a Savage over a remington…..
They’re both good – and the acu-trigger will hold up fine, unless in 60 days of constant combat. The 110 Series Savage is probably the best priced. I don’t care too much for the plastic trigger guard. But I have one anyway. You can save about 70 dollars with the synthetic stock, but, like you, I prefer the walnut. The bluing process used by Remington seems to require more care than the Savage too. Have to keep it oiled to prevent surface rust. Both have excellent actions, bolts, etcetera, but I picked the Savage. This was last August.
Being an old fart, I like wood and blued steel, too. I’m lucky enough to have a bunch of 700’s and have never really been tempted to buy the 110, though if they ever start making the 99 again…..
Is it possible to go to a shooting range or find some place to try both guns before you buy cause once you spend your money your stuck with it. If i had to choose i would take the Remington over the Savage.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Remington rifles, but dollar for dollar Savage is the better deal. I have recently acquired a couple of rifles with the accu-trigger and I am impressed. Savage is a very under appreciated firearm. Buy the Savage and you may not be quite so impressed by the Remington name any more.
well, i went through the same situation. i heard the Savage and its accu-trigger weren’t very reliable… i bought a Remington model 700 .270 and it is great, actually just shot a 4×4 with it last night. its a great gun
I’d opt for the Remington because they use the classic barrel-to-receiver assembly method. I don’t like how Savage rifles are made.
You don’t buy a hunting rifle based on the fact it looks good. A Synthetic stock may or may not be a thing of beauty, but they don’t warp,crack,chip or damage anywhere near as easily as a wood stock. The Deer you kill aren’t going to care what stock you have on it either. If you can’t afford the Remington 700 series with wood stocks, the go with the Synthetic stock Remington. I sell Remington SPS 10-1 over the Savage rifles in my stores. The Savage is of course a viable option and is also a decent rifle for the money, but I could never understand why they would sell a package deal with the “crappy” Scope as you put it. (You are correct the scopes are poor) unless it is only a marketing ploy to compete with the Remington SPS. The Savage Accu-trigger doesn’t sway me towards the Savage 110 either, I guess I’m spoiled by my Remington 700 Match Rifles with their adjustable triggers and like them much better.. If you are going to hunt with this I would recommend you go with the Remington over the Savage for the reasons I’ve mentioned. It really boils down to what suits YOU and what you are happy with

I have both Remingtons and Savage rifles. Never had a problem with either but as for “out of the box” accuracy, the Savage rifles win hands down. My Remingtons have a higher resale value but I don’t plan on selling them. The actions are tight on all the rifles too and although the Remingtons are a little nicer looking, the Savages are just as good when it comes to function. You won’t go wrong either way.
