A well trained architect will always be in demand. Look at Architectural Review, the Architectural Record, Architecture or any of the other professional magazines. You may have to pay some dues, IE; work for a big firm, or do draftsman work to start, but with a good education, and some experience you can expect to do very well. The big trend right now is “Green” architecture. Learn about LEEDS. I work for a self-employed architect, and he makes well over $100K per year.
As a non-licensed person in the architecture field, such as drafts person, designer, wanna be project manager, intern, the pay is highly dependent on the location. For example, after I graduated with my Bachelors of Arch, in Wisconsin I could only make $9 per hour starting. However, in California I started at a small firm for $21 per hour.
